Guwahati, Jan 4 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday asked the police officers to create an environment wherein no individual personal security would be required in the next 2-3 years.

The Chief Minister urged everyone to move away from the PSO (Personal Security Officer) culture.

The Police must counter all threats to the society through a strong intelligence and active monitoring system, Sarma said while addressing the second conference of Superintendents of Police of all 34 districts of Assam at oil town Duliajan in Dibrugarh district in a bid to explore new dimensions of policing through sharing of experiences, education and motivation.

Sarma, who also holds the Home portfolio, urged the Assam police to redefine their role and operational strategy.

He said there is still a lot to be done to continue the reform initiatives of Assam police.

Noting that building a technology-driven police force is one of the main objectives of the state government, the Chief Minister said the Assam police must ensure adaptation of state-of-the-art technology in its work to deal with the changing methods of crime and criminals.

Several Ministers, Chief Secretary Jishnu Baruah, Director General of Police Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta, General-Officer-Commanding-in-Chief of four Corps of Indian Army Lt. Gen. Ravin Khosla were present at the two-day conference, where more than 94 police officers in the ranks of SP, additional SP and SDPO participated.
