12/6/1997Space shuttle Columbia's astronauts return to earth following a two-week science mission on an enquiry awaiting them because of botched satellite release. Columbia and its crew of six, including India-born Kalpana Chawla, swooped through a clear chilly sky and landed on runway at Kennedy Space Centre. Astronauts save runaway $10-million satellite by catching it with their hands.
8/3/1997Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes win the doubles title in the Canadian Maurier Super Nine Doubles Open tennis championships held in Montreal.
9/15/1903Wazir Syed Ali, right-hand batsman and right-arm fast medium bowler, was born at Jalandhar.
9/11/1893Swami Vivekananda represented Hinduism at Chicago's Parliament of the World's Religions, the first ever inter-faith gathering, dramatically enlightening Western opinion to the depth of Hindu philosophy and culture. He spoke for the first time in Chicago.
6/7/1979Bhaskara-I, first experimental satellite for Earth resources/meteorology remote sensing and the Second Satellite of India, launched. This satellite carried TV and microwave cameras. It was launched by Russian launch vehicle 'Intercosmos'.
